READERS QUESTIONS – HOW TO GET THE BEST RETURNS FROM A TREND

These are a traders variation of the investors averaging down approach. The trader takes advantage of each rally and retreat to increase the position size. This also increases position size as the trend is confirmed. The initial position might be small, and the next one larger. As the trend is established, the initial position is sold when specified financial objectives are met. All of this capital is then pyramided into the next price retreat. Unlike the investor, the profit and exit calculations are not based on the average price. These scaled entries are an aggressive way to take advantage of an established trend and developing cash flow.

Trading is much more than just finding stocks that will go up and deliver a profit. Trading includes managing the trade and many traders are not particularly successful in this area. What happens when the stock has gone up 10% and then retraces 5%? Do you hold, or sell? When is it acceptable to ignore a stop loss` exit signal, or a protect profit signal? These are trade management decisions.
Trading also includes broader portfolio management. This is the mix of stocks and instruments traded. It's the combination of types of trades and the allocation of capital to achieve the best return. Which leads us to a trade management question: Is it better to buy and hold a rising stock, or better to trade a rising stock? We use CFE as an example because it carries both clear trend breaks and a history of retracements which give multiple entry points.
